RPFView vs OpenIV vs CodeWalker

Three free Windows tools for the files of Rockstar's games. They overlap, but each does things the others don't, and many modders use more than one. Here is what each one does, including where OpenIV and CodeWalker are the better choice.

In short

  • Choose RPFView for GTA V Enhanced, Red Dead Redemption 2 or GTA IV files, textures, models to Blender as GLB or OBJ, clothing and weapon images for FiveM and RedM, and batch jobs from the command line.
  • Choose OpenIV for GTA V Legacy mods that come as .oiv packages, audio, and model work in 3ds Max or ZModeler through openFormats.
  • Choose CodeWalker for Map and world editing, and getting edited models back into the game through Sollumz in Blender.

RPFView is made by the people who run this site, so read the table with that in mind. Every line about OpenIV and CodeWalker comes from their own pages (listed below, checked October 2026). Where those pages don't say, the table says so.

Using them together

The tools don't get in each other's way. RPFView saves GTA V archives in the same OPEN format as OpenIV, and both put edited archives in the game's mods folder. The game only loads that folder with a loader such as OpenIV.asi (Legacy) or OpenRPF (Enhanced), which RPFView does not install. Mods are for single player: changed game files in GTA Online or Red Dead Online can get an account banned.
