FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Everything people ask before and after installing RPFView. Can't find your question? See the contact details on the legal page.
Is RPFView free?
Yes. RPFView is free to download and use. There are no accounts and no ads. Download it here.
Does RPFView work with GTA V Enhanced?
No. RPFView supports GTA V Legacy for PC only (GTA5.exe). GTA V Enhanced (GTA5_Enhanced.exe, the 2025 gen9 edition) is not supported, and neither are GTA IV or RDR.
Since March 2025 Epic Games lists GTA V Legacy and GTA V Enhanced separately. If you only have Enhanced installed, download GTA V Legacy from your library and point RPFView at that folder.
Does it work with the Steam, Epic Games and Rockstar Games Launcher versions?
Yes, all three, as long as it is GTA V Legacy. RPFView detects the game automatically in Steam libraries, the Rockstar Games Launcher, Epic Games launcher manifests and common install folders on every drive. You can also pick the game folder yourself.
Where do the encryption keys come from? Is this legal and safe?
The game's archives are encrypted. RPFView ships no Rockstar keys. On first start it derives them once from your own copy of GTA5.exe.
The second key part comes from CodeWalker's public magic.dat. RPFView downloads it from CodeWalker's GitHub repository only after you tick a consent box, or you can pick a local copy instead. The keys are verified against your game and cached on your PC, so later starts need nothing. See keys and first start.
Will RPFView modify my game files?
Not unless you explicitly edit and save an archive. Browsing, searching, previewing and exporting never change anything.
Edit mode guards against accidental changes, and when you edit an archive inside the game folder RPFView offers to copy it to the mods\ folder first, so the original game files stay untouched. Saving is crash-safe: the archive is rebuilt into a temporary file and swapped in atomically, and an optional .bak backup is kept. More in archive editing.
How do I load modified archives in the game?
Like OpenIV, RPFView saves archives in the OPEN format. The game needs an RPF/mods loader, such as OpenIV.asi, to load modified archives. Keep your edited copies in the mods\ folder of the game, which is where RPFView steers edits by default.
Can I use mods in GTA Online?
No. Mods are meant for single player. Modifying game files for GTA Online can get your account banned.
RPFView itself is a separate desktop app: it does not inject into the game or run alongside it.
Windows says “Windows protected your PC”. Is it safe?
The installer is not code-signed yet, so Windows SmartScreen may show this message for a new download. Click More info, check that the file is RPFView-win-Setup.exe, then click Run anyway.
Please do not disable SmartScreen or your antivirus. Only download RPFView from this website.
How do updates work, and can I turn them off?
At startup a small window checks for a new version, downloads it with a progress bar, installs it and restarts RPFView. Updates are usually small delta packages, often under 1 MB. Without a connection, RPFView starts normally after a few seconds.
Updates cannot be turned off. They are mandatory by design, so security fixes reach everyone. What changed is listed in the changelog.
Does RPFView collect any data?
No accounts, no ads. The app only talks to the network for four things: update checks to updates.rpfview.app (which, like any web request, include your IP address and the installed version); crash reports to Sentry (EU) when the app runs into an error, with folder paths removed; usage statistics to PostHog (EU) about which features are used, with a random installation ID and no file names or paths (you can turn off both in Settings → Privacy); and, only with your explicit consent, a one-time download of magic.dat from CodeWalker's GitHub repository.
Everything else stays on your PC: settings, keys, logs and the name dictionary in %AppData%\RPFView. Details are in the privacy policy.
What does the command line do?
rpfview-cli.exe is installed next to the app and uses the game folder and keys you already set up. rpfview-cli extract-weapon-metas extracts all weapon metadata of the base game, the update and every DLC pack (about 450 files) in under a second, and extract and find locate and extract any files by name.
It is read-only towards the game, so it is a good fit for scripts and AI agents. See the command-line documentation.
Can I export images of clothing and weapons, for example for a server's shop or clothing menu?
Yes, with the Thumbnail Generator in the Thumbnails menu. Clothing… makes an image of every clothing item in every texture variation of the slots you choose, and Weapons… one per weapon, tint, component, camo and finish. A preview shows every image before you start. Images are PNG, WebP or JPG at 128 to 1024 pixels, with a transparent background except for JPG.
File names come from a pattern such as {slot}/{drawable}_{texture} or {weapon}. Clothing is numbered like the game, so the numbers match the ones scripts and FiveM use. Step by step: clothing images and weapon images; more on RPFView for FiveM.
Do the clothing numbers match my FiveM server?
With All clothing of in the Thumbnail Generator they are the game's numbers: every component and prop of the base game and all DLC packs, counted in the game's load order, as SetPedComponentVariation takes them (male top 55 is the police shirt). The FiveM: game numbers preset writes the same names as fivem-greenscreener, such as male_11_55.png and male_prop_0_46.png.
If your scripts use the collection natives (SetPedCollectionComponentVariation …), pick FiveM: collections instead: names such as male_11_male_heist_3.png carry the collection and the item's number inside it, which stay the same when a new DLC pack shifts the game numbers. See RPFView for FiveM.
Can RPFView open the clothing of my own FiveM resource?
Yes. For images, choose Thumbnails → Clothing…, then Folder, and pick the resource's stream folder; to try textures, open a model from it in Drawable Studio. Files such as mp_m_freemode_01_mp_m_mypack^jbib_000_u.ydd are grouped by the collection named before the ^, so male, female and prop files with the same names don't mix, and new texture variations are saved with the same prefix.
Images of stream files are named by collection, such as male_11_mp_m_mypack_0.png, because their game numbers depend on the other clothing on your server.
Something failed during key setup. What do I do?
The key setup dialog names the step that failed and says what to do next. Most often, check that the selected folder is GTA V Legacy (it contains GTA5.exe, not GTA5_Enhanced.exe).
If it still fails, click Copy details in the dialog to copy a diagnostic report and send it to us. The report never contains keys.
How do I uninstall RPFView?
Open Windows Settings → Apps → Installed apps, find RPFView and choose Uninstall. The portable version is removed by deleting its folder.
RPFView keeps its settings, keys, logs and name dictionary in %AppData%\RPFView. To remove everything, delete that folder too if it still exists.
