rpf.cache in GTA V Enhanced: what it is and why mods don't load

GTA V Enhanced has a file called rpf.cache next to the game. If your mods don't show up in the game, it is often the reason. Here is what to do.

What rpf.cache is

rpf.cache is a file in the folder of GTA V Enhanced, next to GTA5_Enhanced.exe. It is about 16 MB. The game keeps it there itself; you don't need it for anything. GTA V Legacy has no such file.

What exactly is inside isn't documented. It looks like an index of the game's archives, which lets the game find its files faster. That is also why it can get in the way of mods: the game may keep loading the original files instead of the edited copies in your mods folder.

Mods don't load in GTA V Enhanced

  1. Use a mods loader made for Enhanced. OpenIV.asi only works with GTA V Legacy; remove it from the Enhanced folder. For Enhanced, modders use OpenRPF, which also reads your mods folder.
  2. Use OpenRPF 0.2 or newer. Since 0.2 it skips rpf.cache for the files in your mods folder by itself, so there is nothing else to do.
  3. Check that the mod is made for Enhanced. Many mods for Legacy need a new version for Enhanced, because Enhanced stores textures and models differently.
  4. Play with mods in story mode only, never in GTA Online. Mods loaders for Enhanced usually need BattlEye turned off; follow their instructions.

Does RPFView change rpf.cache?

No. RPFView never reads, rebuilds or deletes rpf.cache, and it doesn't change your game's own files: when you edit an archive, it works on a copy in the mods folder. Whether the game uses that copy is up to your mods loader. How to make that copy is explained in how to replace textures and how to open RPF files.
