Before you start
- RPFView with the game folder and keys set up. See how to open RPF files for the first start.
- Blender, or any other 3D program that imports glTF or OBJ.
1. Find the model
GTA V models come in three file types: .yft for vehicles and other objects that break, .ydr for props and weapons, and .ydd for clothing and other sets of models.
- Press Ctrl+F and search with a filter, for example
adder ext:yftfor the Adder orw_pi_pistol ext:ydrfor the pistol. - Double-click the result to open its folder, then click the model once. It appears in the 3D viewer in the preview pane, with its textures found automatically.
2. Check it in the 3D viewer
- Left drag orbits, middle or Shift+left drag pans, the mouse wheel zooms, and F fits the model into view.
- LOD picks the level of detail. The list shows the triangles of each; the one with the most is the most detailed.
- Drawable picks the model inside a
.yddthat holds several. - Textured, Solid and Wireframe switch how it's drawn, and MESHES on the side shows or hides single parts.
3. Export as GLB or OBJ
- In the 3D viewer, open Export. It exports the drawable and LOD you're looking at.
- Choose glTF binary (.glb, embedded textures)… for Blender. It writes a single
.glbfile with the textures inside. - Or choose Wavefront OBJ (+ MTL, PNG textures)… for programs without glTF. It writes an
.obj, an.mtland the textures as PNG files into the same folder.
To export many models at once, select them (or folders) in the file list and choose Export as… (Ctrl+Shift+E). Under Models, pick glTF binary (.glb, textures embedded) or Wavefront (.obj + .mtl + PNG), choose a Destination folder and click Export. This exports the highest level of detail of each model.
For clothing, open the model in Drawable Studio: its Export menu saves the selected model as .glb or OBJ in the same way.
4. Import into Blender
- In Blender, choose File → Import → glTF 2.0 (.glb/.gltf) and pick the
.glbfile. - For OBJ, choose File → Import → Wavefront (.obj) and keep the
.mtland PNG files next to the.obj, so Blender finds the textures. - Switch the viewport to Material Preview to see the textures.
Common problems
The model has no textures
RPFView looks for textures inside the model, in a .ytd next to it, and in the shared vehicle dictionaries. Textures elsewhere aren't found: export the right .ytd with Export as… as PNG and assign the images in Blender.
The model is low detail
Under LOD, pick the entry with the most triangles before you export from the 3D viewer. Export as… always uses the highest level of detail.
