Before you start
- RPFView 0.5 or later, and GTA V Legacy for PC. Download RPFView if you don't have it yet.
- The game folder and keys set up, which RPFView does on its first start. Thumbnails → Weapons… stays greyed out until a game folder is set.
1. Open the weapon images
- In the main window, choose Thumbnails → Weapons…. The Thumbnail Generator opens on its Weapons page.
- The first time, RPFView finds the weapons of all DLC packs. This takes a moment and is reused until you close RPFView.
2. Choose the weapons
- Under Weapons, tick the groups you need: Melee, Pistols, SMGs, Assault rifles, Shotguns, Sniper rifles, Heavy weapons, Throwables and more. All are ticked the first time; All and None tick or clear every group.
- For a single weapon, tick Only one weapon and pick it. Type the first letters of its name to find it.
3. Choose the images of each weapon
Under Images of each weapon, choose what to make for every weapon:
- The weapon as it comes with its default components. On by default.
- Every tint: one image per tint. Off by default. Tints the model doesn't have are left out, and MK II weapons get all 32 of theirs.
- Every component: magazines, scopes, suppressors, flashlights and grips, either On the weapon or On its own.
- Every camo and livery, on the weapon. Livery colour picks the colour for camos you can colour (grey by default); camos with their own colours keep them.
- Every finish: the luxury and other variant models.
4. Pick size, camera and format
- Size: 128 × 128 to 1024 × 1024, 512 × 512 by default.
- Camera: Side, muzzle right (the default), Side, muzzle left, Three-quarter (front right) or Top.
- Leave Lay knives, bats and other weapons modelled standing up flat on, so melee weapons lie like the guns.
- Format: WebP (small, transparent), PNG (lossless, transparent) or JPG (white background), with a Quality setting for WebP and JPG.
5. Name the files
Under Files, three patterns name the images. The defaults use the names the game and your scripts use:
Weapons {weapon} WEAPON_PISTOL.png
Tints tints/{weapon}_{tint} tints/WEAPON_PISTOL_3.png
Components components/{weapon}/{component} components/WEAPON_PISTOL/COMPONENT_AT_PI_SUPP_02.pngWith On its own, the components pattern becomes components/{component}, one image per component. Placeholders lists the rest, such as {model}, {group}, {dlc} and {slot}. A / makes a subfolder.
6. Generate the images
- Check Folder. By default the images go to
Pictures\RPFView\weapons. - Look through the Preview: every image as it will be saved.
- Click Generate, and Open folder when it's done.
One image of a weapon you dressed up
For a single weapon with a particular set of attachments, use Weapon Studio instead:
- Choose Tools → Weapon Studio and pick the weapon. Search by weapon, model, component or DLC pack name.
- Pick a Tint and a component for each slot. Reset goes back to the weapon as it comes.
- Choose a Camera, then click Save image…. It saves the weapon as shown at 1024 pixels as PNG, WebP or JPG. The Background choice only changes the preview; PNG and WebP are saved transparent.
Common problems
“Thumbnails → Weapons…” is greyed out
It needs the game folder and its keys. Set them up once with Tools → Game folder & keys….
Some weapons or components are missing from the result
The message after the run says why: weapons that only have a placeholder model in your game version, tints the model doesn't have, and components that could not be placed are left out.
