Before you start
- RPFView 0.10.0 or later, and Red Dead Redemption 2 for PC. Download RPFView if you don't have it yet.
- Red Dead Redemption 2 chosen as your game and set up. RPFView asks on its first start; otherwise choose File → Switch game…. See how to open RPF files.
The images come from the game's own clothing list, so they cover the base game's items for story mode and online. Clothing from a RedM resource can't be loaded yet, and weapon images aren't available for Red Dead Redemption 2 yet.
1. Open the Thumbnail Generator
- With Red Dead Redemption 2 chosen, choose Thumbnails → Clothing… in the main window.
- Under Clothing, choose a list next to All clothing of: Male (story), Female (story), Male (online), Female (online), Horses and animals (story) or Horses and animals (online).
- The first time, RPFView finds the clothing of the game. This takes a moment.
2. Choose the categories
- Under Categories, tick the ones you need, such as Hats, Coats, Boots or Gun belts, or for horses Saddles, Saddle blankets and Manes. All and None tick or clear every category. Each category shows how many items it has.
- Leave Leave out Rockstar's placeholders on. It skips the checkerboard textures and stand-in models that would otherwise end up in your menu.
You get one image per item. Each colour of a piece of clothing is an item of its own in the game, such as CLOTHING_ITEM_M_GLOVES_000_TINT_001, so each colour gets its own image.
3. Pick size, camera and format
- Size: 128 × 128 to 1024 × 1024. 512 × 512 is the default and plenty for a menu.
- Camera: Front, Three-quarter (front left), Side or Back. The horse lists start on Side, so a saddle isn't seen end-on. Each item is framed to fill the image on its own.
- Format: WebP gives small files with a transparent background, the best choice for a menu that loads many images. PNG is lossless and transparent. JPG has no transparency and uses a white background.
- Quality (WebP and JPG): 90 by default. Lower makes smaller files; for WebP, 100 is lossless.
4. Name the files for RedM
Under Files, open Presets. RedM scripts look clothing up by a number, the item's hash as a signed number, so pick Script numbers (RedM) if your scripts use those:
- Item names (the default):
gloves/CLOTHING_ITEM_M_GLOVES_000_TINT_001.png - Item names per ped:
male_online/gloves/CLOTHING_ITEM_M_GLOVES_000_TINT_001.png - Script numbers (RedM):
gloves/745251899.png, the number scripts pass to the game. It can be negative, such as-1978766118. - Hashes:
gloves/2C6BA43B.png, the same hash as 8 hex digits.
Every preset puts each category in a subfolder. You can also type your own pattern in Name: Placeholders lists everything you can use, such as {item}, {number}, {hash}, {category}, {ped} (male, female or animal) and {mode} (story or online). A / makes a subfolder, and Example shows the name of the first image.
5. Generate the images
- Check Folder. By default the images go to a folder named after the list in
Pictures\RPFView\Red Dead Redemption 2; Browse… picks another one. - Look through the Preview. Faded tiles are placeholders that will be left out.
- Click Generate. The progress shows how many images are done and about how long is left.
- When it finishes, click Open folder and copy the images into your clothing menu, shop or stable resource.
Common problems
The clothing is grey or has no colours
Items without colours were drawn before RPFView finished indexing the game's textures; wait until the status bar of the main window says it's done, then generate again. If a few items are still grey, RPFView couldn't find their texture; the message at the end of the run counts them and names the first one.
Some images end in “-2”
Two images got the same name, so RPFView numbered the second one. Your pattern needs {item}, {number} or {hash} to tell items apart.
The Weapons tab is greyed out
Weapon images aren't available for Red Dead Redemption 2 yet. They work for GTA V (guide) and GTA IV.
Can I make images of my server's own clothing?
Not yet. For Red Dead Redemption 2 the Thumbnail Generator only reads the game's clothing list, not a resource folder. More on RPFView for RedM.
